It is no secret that we Lizards LOVE bizarre magick and psychic entertainment. In fact, we believe that before we discovered bizarre magick or 'regular' magic SUCKED- and it was only about learning about what it takes to present bizarre magic well, that we were able to apply that to our regular magic and take it to a new level.

But, one thing that can be said about bizarre magic... it is seldom practical. Oh, you get hint at it, you can weave a story, but when it comes to really drawing your audience past the veil of doubt and into the realm of 'Could Be' all while palming a squid tentacle dyed with purple marker..... well, you get the idea.

So, here is a book that makes a bold claim... That is offers PRACTICAL bizarre and storytelling magic.. and I think, my friends... it does it very well.

Memento Mori- A spectator successfully divines three strange & disturbing modes of death; the last one that! they have selected for themselves reveals perhaps more than they bargained for...

'This too shall pass...' A quick and simple tarot card effect which is used to illustrate a traditional tale from Sufism.

Contractual Obligation - A volunteer selects and signs a tarot card, before it is shown to the audience, and signature is seen by them; the card is then plainly and visibly burned - even as it burns, it is shown to the volunteer to ensure that no switch has occurred, yet the signed card then re-appears, with both the audience and volunteer confirming that, impossibly, it is indeed the same card and signature that was seen moments earlier.

Fear of Flying - A feather floats from the hand of the magus, as a short tale of fear, death and angels is told.

Presenting Bizarre Magic to the Paying Public! An Essay.

Kevin the cross-eyed Vampire hunter - Enough said!

'All that is necessary for Evil to triumph...' part I - A spectator has a free choic! e (sight unseen) of a rune from a full set in the fairest possible manner; it is revealed to be the 'Sig' rune, symbolising 'Triumph', and matching the ensign of the dreaded 'S.S.' - predicted beforehand in a non-gimmicked envelope containing both the insignia and a photo of Himmler, Hitler's Occult-obsessed henchman.

'All that is necessary for Evil to triumph...' part II A (fictitious) tale is told based upon the (real) French heroine 'Marie-Madeleine Fourcade', whereby the audience correctly name her code word, her place of birth, before seeing evidence of her burning spirit still very active in this world despite her death in 1989!

Scripting & Character - An essay

Lockerbie - A psychometry test is given to an independent member of the audience; 4 other spectators take part in an experiment to choose an envelope, 3 numbers and a finally a place on a map after holding the test envelope. It transpires that they predict the death toll, element and place of the Sco! ttish town of Lockerbie were Pan Am flight 103 was sabotaged on 23 December 1988.

The Collier's Rant - This may be presented as a Tarot card and Telekinetic timber effect, or as a full blown Saance.

Puzzling Spectators - An essay.

The Atheist's Last Test of Faith - A self confessed atheist offers to sell his soul - signing a contract; the contract is burned, but only after that does the 'Agent of Beelzebub' realize he's out of receipts and the contract is returned within the universal symbol of the soul - a boiled egg.

Scene Stealer - A spectator randomly selects a movie title from 10 and is asked to merely think of a memorable scene in the movie, yet the performer picks up a pad and draws the very scene the spectator is thinking of, and may also reveal the title or even let another spectator guess the title from the drawing (depending on art skills, etc!) (May be done entirely impromptu with 10 business cards and a pen).

A Question of Fate - A s! pectator freely chooses a single tarot card, collecting the rest and putting them in an opaque bag out of sight of the performer and the audience; the performer then gives a reading without seeing the card which is uncannily accurate, before producing a small box which is found to contain a match for the card folded up inside by its self.

And there are some other tid bits you will have to wait to see....

Maleficium By Paul Prater

Maleficium By Paul Prater

Maleficium By Paul Prater

get it here
To be honest, at first I was at a bit of a loss as to what to write about this book- Whenever I say that something we are publishing is beautiful, inventive, clever, creative and more it sounds self serving, even when it is true.

With this book, I am tempted to say, 'Just scroll down and look at the free preview... I think it says it all' but I know some folks even need to be sold on that.

So let me say a few things, and then share the introduction from the book from Paul. You can go check out the PDF preview after that to see the full table of contents and our usual generous free preview of the front of the book to whet your appetite.

We receive manuscripts in a variety of states of 'doneness'- some a shambles, others almost ready to print.

This book is 99% Paul Prater with 1% of our own intervention (Interference) when a font was screwy or we thought something needed to be tweeked.

But Paul is an artist. Through a! nd through. From his photographic work that can be found throughout the book and in the color plate we will be adding to the support pages for owners only- to the meticulously well thought out designs for props. Paul is very detail oriented and we like that.

The stories too are crafted in a precise way as well to lead your audience to the proper emotional state of mind-body. Within the articles found throughout the book Paul also shares his thoughts on bizarre and storytelling magic and attempts to introduce the bizarre aficionados AND the newcomer to storytelling magic with food for though and inspiration.

In Paul's own words from the introduction:

This is a collection of effects that I have created. Some of them were created for specific occasions and a few were created especially for this book. As you will see as you read, virtually nothing from the magic store is needed to present these effects. I enjoy making my own props and most of these effects will! require that you make your own props. Furthermore, I always found it frustrating to buy a book on magic and find that to perform many of the effects; it would require you to buy magic props.

That isn't the case with this book. I enjoy writing out the process for an effect and I have to have a script. As I prepare a new piece I have to sit down and type out everything. It forces me to think out the routine in my head. Creating a script gives me much better stories than simply trying to wing it. Having a script is also a lot more entertaining, then saying 'ok, now I do this and then I do that.' Since, I do this with every effect I create; I figured that I should compile them and get them out there to all who may be interested.

Additionally, I have learned so much in this area of magic just by reading other magician's works and I hoped that I could also share my knowledge as they have done with me.

Finally, I would be lying if I didn't admit there is a little bit o! f ego involved in publishing your works. I also have included some other things I enjoy. I have my degree in English and while working towards that degree I read a fair amount of poetry. I have also included my own art work and photography. I have my minor in studio art and worked on my masters in this field. I enjoy art, but unfortunately, I don't get to do as much as I would like. I consider magic my art, for the most part.

However, I did want to share some of my work in this book. I hope that the art and poetry add to the magic text and do not detract from it. While I enjoy presenting the type of magic contained in this book, I also enjoy doing cups and balls, card tricks, the square circle and pulling out silks and spring flowers. I enjoy doing coin magic, making a silk appear and disappear, and all of that other fun stuff and I think there is a place for that type of magic as well. It is simply called entertainment.

However, I cannot resist the urge to imbue the! magic with some deeper meaning. I hope that this is something that you will strive for as well.

I think it makes the magic richer, the magician more mysterious and leaves the audience more thoroughly entertained.

I hope you enjoy what I have presented.

Excerpt from the Preface of the book:

When I started working on this project, I was searching for a title for this booklet that would reflect my viewpoint on magicin in a nutshell. The title I came up with was 'Magic Evolution.' This title conveys the idea that magic, like anything else in life, is a process of evolution, where one thing evolves to another. In other words, almost every trick 'invented' was based on someone else's 'invention.' We are just updating, upgrading and modifying (not always with success) ideas and thoughts of other magicians from a prior stage of the evolution.

Now, some might object to the idea that everything in magic is just a modification or improvement of another idea. That might be true to some degree, but I do believe that even 'revolutionary new ideas' grew out of influence and inspiration.

Obviously, the title 'Magic Evolution' didn! 't make it to the cover, as it risked the implication of a historical treatise about the evolution of magic: therefore, 'Chapter One' tooke its place. as this is the first chapter - for better or for worse - of my contributions to the evolution of magic.

I hope you will enjoy perfecting and performing the routines described in this booklet, and hopefully it will ignite your mind to take it further in the magic evolution.

COVER: Art Imitating Life Imitating Magic Imitating Art (by Shawn McMaster)
Having appeared on and off in Teatro ZinZanni over the past eleven years, Yevgeniy Voronin has perfected his magical, comedic, rather vampiric stage persona, The Maestro. With his deadpan expressions and implacable demeanor, he seems much like a painting come to life, although just the opposite has proven to be true.

The Clown Knows (by Robert E. Neale)
It has been said that anything worth taking seriously is worth making fun of. The classic clown takes this concept to his theatrical heart, providing a skewed look at the darker aspects of life. Robert Neale examines these ideas and provides two tricks that do the same.

    Lisboa Magica (by David Britland)
The fourth annual Street Magic World Festival was held in Portugal this past August, bringing together fifteen performers from around the globe, presenting 176 performances over six days on the streets of Lisbon.

1,000 Lives! (Words by Steve Bryant, Photographs by David Linsell)
The fourth iteration of the "unconventional convention," MAGIC Live!, proved to be even more unconventional than usual. With a variety of sessions from which to choose, no two of the over 1,000 attendees had exactly the same week of magic in Las Vegas - although only one had trouble keeping a rubber snake in a bucket of muddy water.

The Show Doctor (by Jeff McBride)
DEAR SHOW DOCTOR: I died onstage last month. All of the hard labor I had put into my act failed miserably. As soon as I walked onto the stage, my mind went blank. I even forgot the order of tricks I had prepared. I couldn't remember what to say or where I had preset many of my props. How do performers like you remember all this stuff? I mean, there's so much to do and keep track of, it makes me crazy. Any ideas? - Sid S.

    Braindrops (by Adam Rubin)
This month's trick is marginally related to dental hygiene. I often perform it after a meal with friends and I'm always surprised by the strong reaction. In fact, this trick has fooled some of my super-smart magic friends, and that's certainly cause for me to fla! sh the pearly whites. The effect is: you take a toothpick, break it in half to test its integrity, then magically put it back together so you can work that sesame seed out from between your molars.

    Directions (by Joanie Spina)
It's absolutely true: in watching other performers, we can see ourselves. We sometimes make the same mistakes or the same brilliant choices, but don't recognize them until we observe them in someone else. Through this series of articles, enhanced by the accompanying videos you can find at www.MAGICmagazine.com, you can learn from watching other performers as I gently point out ways that their material can be improved, as well as the aspects of their acts that are working well. Although they refer directly to the video in question, these points also carry over as general principles of performing. There are many right ways of doing things, and these are a few options.
