Review : Phork | |
I got a chance to review Phork this week and I do have some mixed feelings about this product. On the one hand I think it is a really ingenious invention and makes for an amazing trick but I somehow had lots of difficulties keeping it setup for when I wanted to use it, but let’s start from the beginning. When you receive Phork you get a medium size, nice looking, black cardboard box with several items, which I won’t go into to reveal too much. The trick does come with a DVD, which does explain the handling well, shows the performance and also has an extra classical metal bending Banachek routine, which I assume they got permissions to share. The DVD appears to be self-burned (it has a purple bottom) so some older DVD players might have issues with it; it played fine in my player though. The DVD menu does not have any sound but runs a video so I first thought it doesn’t play right but the actual chapters played fine with sound and everything, so no issues there. When you watch the DVD, you immediately realize that one item appears to be missing from the set but upon reexamination of the box I noticed a little note which I missed in my initial excitement when I unpacked it at first. The note explains why the item is missing and that is not really required. The DVD goes also into this and I used the substitute method explained on the DVD without any issues (something you should be able to as long as own a freezer). I actually preferred it this way and honestly would probably have used it this way even if the missing item would have been included; but that might just be me. Now to the Phork itself; again, I applaud the ingenuity of it. I did follow all instructions carefully and prepped it as I was supposed to. If the Phork is set up and the effect is performed right away it works like a charm. The effect and the visuals of it are nothing short of awesome. It truly looks amazing. However the problem I ran into was with the storage of the Phork for a later performance. I just could not get it to stay in it is setup state; it would always reset. I can’t really go into the details without revealing the secret but that was a bummer as I was really hoping to use it. So I am not sure if I got a bad model and it usually works better but that put a damper on it. So if you can prep it and use it right away – like a in restaurant walk around - this should be fine and it is an amazing effect. There is one way I can think of to not have it reset to early but it is just not something that would work for me. However, if you wear a jacket with pocket when you perform you can probably work around this issue should your Phork have the same reset issue. | |
