COVER: Art Imitating Life Imitating Magic Imitating Art (by Shawn McMaster)
Having appeared on and off in Teatro ZinZanni over the past eleven years, Yevgeniy Voronin has perfected his magical, comedic, rather vampiric stage persona, The Maestro. With his deadpan expressions and implacable demeanor, he seems much like a painting come to life, although just the opposite has proven to be true.

The Clown Knows (by Robert E. Neale)
It has been said that anything worth taking seriously is worth making fun of. The classic clown takes this concept to his theatrical heart, providing a skewed look at the darker aspects of life. Robert Neale examines these ideas and provides two tricks that do the same.

Lisboa Magica (by David Britland)
The fourth annual Street Magic World Festival was held in Portugal this past August, bringing together fifteen performers from around the globe, presenting 176 performances over six days on the streets of Lisbon.

1,000 Lives! (Words by Steve Bryant, Photographs by David Linsell)
The fourth iteration of the "unconventional convention," MAGIC Live!, proved to be even more unconventional than usual. With a variety of sessions from which to choose, no two of the over 1,000 attendees had exactly the same week of magic in Las Vegas - although only one had trouble keeping a rubber snake in a bucket of muddy water.

Update

Talk About Tricks (by Joshua Jay)
It's a star-studded, all-card issue of "Talk About Tricks," with contributions from some of the most respected names in contemporary card magic. Yo! u'll learn several strong, self-working effects that you can incorporate into your repertoire. John Bannon, Pit Hartling, Denis Behr, Kostya Kimlat, John Luka, and newcomer Frank Fogg are ready to deal you in!

The Show Doctor (by Jeff McBride)
DEAR SHOW DOCTOR: I died onstage last month. All of the hard labor I had put into my act failed miserably. As soon as I walked onto the stage, my mind went blank. I even forgot the order of tricks I had prepared. I couldn't remember what to say or where I had preset many of my props. How do performers like you remember all this stuff? I mean, there's so much to do and keep track of, it makes me crazy. Any ideas? - Sid S.

    Braindrops (by Adam Rubin)
This month's trick is marginally related to dental hygiene. I often perform it after a meal with friends and I'm always surprised by the strong reaction. In fact, this trick has fooled some of my super-smart magic friends, and that's certainly cause for me to fla! sh the pearly whites. The effect is: you take a toothpick, break it in half to test its integrity, then magically put it back together so you can work that sesame seed out from between your molars.

    Directions (by Joanie Spina)
It's absolutely true: in watching other performers, we can see ourselves. We sometimes make the same mistakes or the same brilliant choices, but don't recognize them until we observe them in someone else. Through this series of articles, enhanced by the accompanying videos you can find at www.MAGICmagazine.com, you can learn from watching other performers as I gently point out ways that their material can be improved, as well as the aspects of their acts that are working well. Although they refer directly to the video in question, these points also carry over as general principles of performing. There are many right ways of doing things, and these are a few options.

Silk In Apple by Alexander DeCova

    ! get it here
In this DVD, Alexander de Cova shares his clever insight, finesse, and subtlety to one of magic's favorite cabaret tricks - the Silk in Apple. This effect, that has been a mainstay routine of many magicians, has been refined by Alexander's great attention to detail, and it has been augmented by his new approach and methodology!

A spectator signs or draws a picture on a silk handkerchief. Slowly and deliberately, the magician vanishes the silk. This diabolical method alone is worth the price of admission. But, it doesn't stop there, the apple is not what you may think. It's totally different from previous methods. Your hands and fingers are in full view the entire time. The 'secret move' is not like what the other methods require!

Alexander explains all the preparations, moves, and fine points in his well-known meticulous manner.

The DVD comes with the special gimmick to perform this amazing routine.

Alpha to Omega by Stephen Tucker

Alpha to Omega by Stephen Tucker

Alpha to Omega by Stephen Tucker

    get it here
Stephen Tucker's 'Omega' has long been hailed as one of the greatest packet tricks ever created. Simple to do, fully examinable and devastatingly impressive, it will knock your spectators for six!

    So what is Omega'

You have two sets of four of a kind (let's say, two sets of Aces). One set is tabled. One set is placed behind your back. You have ANY Ace named. Seconds later, this ace is face down, in the set behind your back, and... it has a different coloured back to the other three! You now rub their freely named Ace on your sleeve and its face completely vanishes!

THESE FOUR CARDS ARE NOW EXAMINABLE!

BUT THAT'S NOT ALL- Now, you spread the tabled set of face down Aces (that have been in full view throughout) and their named Ace is face up!

BUT THAT'S NOT ALL- now someone removes the face up Ace and it has a different coloured back to the other three!

BUT THAT'S NOT ALL- the shell-shocked spectator flips over the three remaining face down Aces only to discover that they are all BLANK! THEIR NAMED CARD WAS THE ONLY ONE THEY COULD HAVE CHOSEN!

Now for the amazing bit - they can name ANY Ace! (It can be different every time you perform).

There are no false counts - The handling looks the same every time!

There are no specially printed cards! (No need to 'ever' buy an expensive replacement set!)

100% self-working' Not quite, but Omega is incredibly easy to perform!

Stephen Tucker teaches you all the inside workings of this fabulous routine, PLUS five more variations that take the principle and exploit it in amazing ways!

Plus: An extensive range of PDF material for you to print out. These pdfs include many specially designed cards and images (ESP cards etc.) for some of the routines.

    * BONUS
  • On top of the 'stuffed-to-the-gills greatness' of the Omega material, you'll also get two bonus Tucker routines. And these! aren't throw away ideas - oh no - these are bona fide CLASSICS! (Indeed, they have a combined RRP of UKP37 if bought separately!).
  • Exhibit 'A' (the case of the unsolved murder) - a Cluedo/CSI/Murder Mystery type of routine once performed on UK TV by Simon Lovell.
  • Matrix Reloaded - A very, very weird coin matrix that can be performed with or without coins!

    * BONUS #2 * And there are THREE effects (*with explanations) from other BBM titles included

    * BONUS #3 * Oh, and we have included Cameron Francis' 'Sleight School' too - learn EIGHTEEN essential magic sleights!

    DVD Contents:

  • Omega
  • ESP Omega
  • Blind Faith
  • One Eye Open
  • EZ'Wave
  • The Amazing Four Aces Trick
  • Tips & Ideas
  • * DVD Cards
  • * Exhibit 'A'
  • * Matrix Reloaded

'Superb! Omega is the most baffling and incredible packet trick I've seen in years. Magicians will enjoy performing it as much as their audiences will love watching it!'
    - Jerry Sadowitz

'Goldstein, Duvivier and Bannon all make use of the 'Parade Of The Kings' gimmick. For my money, Tucker's Omega is the best and uses examinable cards!'
    - Dr. Peter Moffat

    'Omega is omega!'
    - Arthur Emerson

'Omega is arguably the best non-gaffed version of Twisted Sisters you will see. If you don't know this, I think it will fool you'.

    Corners Through Window

A torn and restored trick that is taken to a new dimension - the other side. Two popular tricks combined as one blockbuster routine. A torn and restored card trick has been melted together with a card through window routine. Simple and amazingly effective. A beautiful presentation of artistic reverence to the magic industry.

A spectator selects a card. The magician folds the card in half, lengthwise and widthwise, to create four equal parts. He then begins to tear the card into four equal sections. After having four corners of the cards, he hands the spectator one corner piece of the card.

The magician places one corner of the playing card on the outside portion of a glass window. He shows that the card is on the other side of the window. He grabs one of the corner pieces and places it on the opposite side of the glass window, that he placed the first piece ! from, to begin restoring the card back together. He finally grabs the last 3rd piece of playing card corner in his hand and places it the window also. As the magician tries to grab the card off the window, he is unable to! It is on the other side of the window!

The magician grabs the card from the other side of the window and reveals the card has been restored with a missing piece. He asks for the missing corner piece from the spectator. The piece matches perfectly.

Comes with gimmicks and instructional DVD.

The Thrill and Mysticism of Escapology

Escapology is an art that has been practiced since ancient times. Artists use this form of magic to escape from restraints, traps and confined spaces. It is a way of jolting our innate fear of not being able to escape in a life threatening situation that thrills us when we see these artists perform impossible and unthinkable feats whilst being restrained or disabled in some way. There have been many famous escapologists including the well known Houdini to the more recent artists such as David Copperfield, David Blaine and Criss Angel to name a few. The greatest skill that these people have is the ability to perfect methods of escape and combine them with keeping the people entertained and guessing for hours or even days at a time. They push themselves to the very edge of the boundaries of human life as we know it.The acts of escapology can be attained by two methods. One is by illusionist's techniques practiced and performed with a high degree of skill. The Other method is a! ctually doing the escaping by using pure strength, agility and daring. Whatever the method is; these daredevil and death defying performances always manage to capture the imagination of the audiences. The traditional paraphernalia of escapologists include locked boxes, straightjackets, ropes, padlocks, underground pits, handcuffs and containers filled with sand. Today, there are more and more advanced acts available for our enjoyment as escapologists work hard to add value to the original acts. Some even try to add an obstacle course for the artist to struggle with after escaping. More than one escape trick can be combined in one act. The biggest name well known the world over for his ability and dexterity in escapology is the great Harry Houdini who built his career on this type of magic illusion or stunts. Houdini was an expert in the art of escapology and tried hard to retain the aura of mystery and suspense at all times. This is needed for any true escape artist to a certain degr! ee as the audiences expects it, the more mysterious the better. Many of Houdini's acts were based on technical skills as much as magic itself and involved lock-picking and contortion or both. He demonstrated his abilities by escaping from handcuffs, prison cells, straightjackets and padlocks. His well known acts include the Chinese Water Torture and Metamorphosis. Norman Murray Walters was an escapologist and an illusionist who was a Houdini contemporary. It is this Australian magician that first coined the word escapologist to describe and differentiate this branch of magic. Throughout the years performers have added to these acts or renewed them and are called modern day 'Houdinis' by the public. Escapology has entered into our lives in more ways than seeing performances by artists and this speaks for its enduring allure. Scores of books, films, comics and novels have dealt with this age old theme which seems to appeal to young and old alike. Harry Houdini has starred in many fi! lms and has more comics, books and films based upon him. Today, there are even video games to thrill audiences with escapology. David Copperfield, David Blaine, Lance Burton, Jeff McBride and Criss Angel are all present day magicians performing to packed audiences throughout the world and have extensive escapology acts in their repertoire. In India, the land of mysticism itself, escapologists are to be seen performing in busy street corners and theaters alike. They are helped by the ancient art of Yoga to achieve unthinkable heights in many of these acts. The thrill and sense of achievement that we feel when an artist manages to escape seemingly impossible restraints are invaluable.
