Penetration magics by using glass or a mirror can produce illusive atmosphere, and they are thought as tricks with full of visual sensation. To our regret, however, we could not find any device of sufficiently good and durable workmanship for daily use. Some were too tawdry, others were heavy, or too large and not easy to handle. Mikame Craft has made Mirror-A-Che particularly wedded to its design, weight, and impression of handling. This device can also be applied daily as a wall hanging.

Dimensions Approximately: 22 inches (Tall) x 18 inches (Wide)

    A Touch of Magic

A magic trick well done is to bring a smile to a face, awe struck wonder to some and happiness all around. There is nothing better than magic to transport us to a fantasy land full of impossible happenings and unattainable outcomes. We can all try our hand at magic, but those who succeed are the ones who practiced the art of magic relentlessly and continued on to become accomplished performers. As one magician put it once 'It is better to master one magic trick well than to know a hundred.' Learning magic can be fun and will be a hobby that will accompany you throughout life. There are many tricks that are easy to master and these are the ones to start with. Even renowned magicians such as David Copperfield, Lance Burton, David Blaine, Chris Angel, Steve Barry and Darren Brown had to start somewhere. The adage 'practice makes perfect' is true of magic more than in any other field. Constant practice cannot be stressed enough. A good place to start is by trying out a simple ca! rd trick or a coin trick. These tricks usually involve sleight of hand which needs to be practiced with diligence. It is a good idea to do a little bit of everything on a regular basis as this will make you able to perform more tricks and give you a wider range. The art of performing is as important magic itself. A carefully placed dramatic pause, a joke or well feigned surprise all adds to your magic skills. A little bit of suspense and setting up the trick for maximum effect has to be done artfully. A trick well done is guaranteed to freak out the audience and they will want more of your mad magic. It is the reaction from the crowd that a magician lives for and once you get the taste of a captivated audience there is no turning back. The test for a successful magic trick is how well it is remembered afterwards. The magic tricks, however simple they were that we saw as children stay with us forever added to the few memories that are clear and indelibly etched in our minds forever. Therefore, a magic trick should always be performed before an audience only after it has been perfected and set with utmost care. As a magician one of the most important lessons to learn is never to explain a trick and only say 'it's just magic.' This is always accepted without question as deep inside us we all want to be awestruck by magic, a seemingly larger than life force. Once you have mastered a few tricks it is best performed by putting together a variety of tricks such as card tricks, coin tricks, handkerchief tricks and rope tricks. The variety keeps the audience interested and excited. They should not even know what they really saw and should go home still feeling bemused. The basic rules of magic should be adhered to by all magicians as it is the only way to keep the magical mystery alive. First of all, never reveal the secret. This should be done only in the case of another person who wants to learn magic and never to an audience. For a magic trick to succeed the! setting that it is performed in has to be ideally suited for the trick. So the second rule of magic is to perform only under a perfect setting. Thirdly, a trick has to be practiced and perfected before showing off. Practicing has to be as natural as breathing to a magician and this may mean how successful you are or not in the long run. Finally, you have to leave them wanting more. Never overstay your welcome and run the risk of becoming boring. It is true for magic as it is for anyone else in show business.

    stain

Andrew Mayne (creator of Ghost Vision, Gut Buster and Ghost Ink) presents a frightening, visual way to reveal a word or image to your audience.

The performer presents a mysterious dark substance. He alludes to the idea that it was acquired through nefarious means. A spectator is invited to choose a word or the name of a famous deceased person (using a force taught on the DVD)

A blank card is placed into a plastic container along with the substance. It begins to stain the card and form the word or the thought of image. The bag containing the revelation is given to the spectator to keep as a dark memento.

Stain can be performed close-up and on stage. Stain uses household materials and can be prepared in minutes.

WARNING: This DVD also includes Andrew Mayne's short film: The Stain. It contains disturbing imagery and is not intended for younger audiences.

    shiv

shiv: 1.). A makeshi! ft weapon
2.). A deadly game player with a sharp object

Based upon Andrew Mayne's Stab'd effect. Shiv is a disturbing presentation of Russian Roulette using a sharpened pencil.

One sharpened pencil goes into one of four envelopes - the others containing harmless straws. A victim is given a totally free choice and must eliminate three of the envelopes by stabbing their own body!

The final envelope is revealed to contain the deadly shiv!

Shiv is easy to perform and under the performer's complete control. No special props or gimmicks are required. It can be performed impromptu.

    Running Time Approximately: 65 min

This special pack is capable of several effects. Here are just two of the best.

Think A Card - A spectator cuts off a packet of cards and shuffles them. He fans the packet and freely thinks of any card. The spectator shuffles the packet and then shuffles them back into the pack. Unbelievably, the performer is able to produce the thought of card from the pack.Think As I Think - A shuffled pack is cut into two piles. The spectator chooses one packet and shuffles the packet, whilst the performer shuffles the other packet. Both the spectator and the performer think of any card from their respective packets. Both packets are shuffled again, and then the two haves are shuffled together. The spectator and the performer both name their thought of cards. The performer deals the cards face up on to the table and incredibly, the two merely thought of cards are discovered next to one another.

Includes Cards, Instructional bookl! et and DVD with Marc Paul performing and explaining all the nuances of the Miracle Pack.

    Sanda-Panda Box by Devin Knight

The SANDA-Panda Mystery Box is an ungimmicked 6'x 4' cardboard box. It is always in full view and gives you the ability to make near impossible predictions. No pre-show work and all are ONE-MAN effects. No secret assistants or stooges are used in any of the effects. NO FORCES of any kind are used in any effect.

IMPOSSIBLE CARD PREDICTION: Two participants form a card to ensure the choice is random. One chooses the suit and the other the value with no restrictions. You take the lid off the box - inside is a deck of cards and a folded 8' x 5' piece of paper. The participant unfolds the paper. Written on it is THE CARD JUST NAMED IS IN POSITION 14 FROM THE TOP. The participant removes the deck and counts down to the 14th card from the top. It is the same card just formed at random. No switches or sleights used. The participant takes out the paper and deck from the box. THE PERFORMER DOES NOT STICK HIS HAND INSIDE THE BOX, NOR ! DOES HE TOUCH THE PAPER OR DECK!

LADYLOVE: The closed box is on a table in full view. Any man stands and is asked to tell you the first name of his wife or girlfriend. Assume he says, 'Sandy.' He comes forward and takes out a rose from inside the box. ATTACHED to the rose is a note that reads, 'Give this rose to Sandy.' This is an amazing, but romantic bit of business that is very strong and involves no pre-show work. The magician never touches the flower or note. Everything can be left for examination.

UNCANNY BOOK TEST: A small book is inside the closed box. Anyone calls out a page number. Another participant comes up and takes the book out of the box. He turns to the page number just named, looks at the first word on the page and reads it aloud. You instruct him to take out the folded paper from the box and unfold it. Written on it is the word he just read aloud. Baffling beyond words!

If the performer wishes, any of the above predictions can be INSIDE AN ENV! ELOPE that is inside the box. This adds yet another layer of mystery to the effect.

DEAL OR NO DEAL: The performer says that he took a picture earlier of what is inside the box. In the picture is a hundred-dollar bill wrapped around a deck of cards and one folded playing card. The performer says he folded the card so the person cannot see what it is. The performer offers to play a game of chance with the participant. All the participant has to do to win the $100.00, is to select any card which is NOT the same as the folded card inside the box. His odds are 51 out 52 of winning the money.

A deck of cards is spread face-up. The participant is given a free choice of any card. NO FORCE. That card is left face-up on the table. After some byplay, the performer offers the participant a quarter to give up his chance. Whether he accepts or declines, the participant (not the performer) opens the folded card that was inside the box. It is identical to the one he freely selected! . He does not win the $100.00. If he looks through the deck in the box, he will find the folded card is MISSING FROM THE DECK! At no time does the performer touch either the folded card or the deck inside the box! There are no switches of the folded card.

PRECOGNITIVE COLD-READING: A detailed (not vague) answer to a question asked by the client is found inside the box. The performer apparently wrote the answer before the person even asked it. This will convince the skeptics you are psychic. Takes cold-reading to a new level.

In all these effects, everything can be left for examination. This effect comes complete with the box and detailed directions on how to perform all these effects. The effects possible with the SANDA-Panda box are unlimited.

Cover: Notes from Beijing (by Wittus Witt)
The 24th gathering of the Fédération Internationale des Sociétés Magiqueswas held this past July in China. As nearly 100 acts from around the world vied for the top prizes, Wittus Witt was there taking notes and photos.

In His Words: Bryan Lee (by Mark Nelson)
Thousands of magicians have appeared on the Palace stage, which is the only showroom in the Magic Castle that requires a full-time stage technician. And for all but the first decade, the position of Stage Manager/Theater Director has been held by one man: Bryan Lee. Bryan has worked with the most famous names in magic on and off the Palace stage. He has worked tirelessly during his more than 22 years on the job, lobbying local lighting and sound companies to contribute improvements to the lighting and sound systems, maintaining the technical aspects of the stage, spearheading a major redecoration of the showroom, and booking the acts for Sunday (now weekend) Brunches. He also met the lovely and talented Mystina, his wife of fifteen years, performing on the Palace stage. Additionally, he's created magical effects and built magic apparatus for dozens of magicians.

Thirty Years of Makin' Magic (by Murray Hatfield)
John Kaplan has been touring Canada for thirty years, performing his unique brand of family-friendly magic for audiences in practically every major city, as well as some of the country's remotest communities. Along the way, his Fundraising Magic program has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for hundreds of community organizations. But when I met him in 1971, he was simply a red-haired, freckle-faced teenage magician my mom hired to perform at my younger brother's eighth birthday party. I had no idea at the time, as I sat watching him make candies appear from a small metal tube, what a profound influence he was to ! have on my life.

The Chavez College of Magic: A Tradition of Quality (by Mark Nelson)
The world of fiction is rich with magicians and mentors, great conjurors and learned instructors. Most familiar to modern readers is the faculty of Hogwarts, where Harry Potter and his fellow wizards toil over ancient spells. But in the real world, only one school has reached a reputation that comes close to touching that mythic institution, having provided instruction to thousands in the fine art of manipulation, and inspiring thousands more. It is the Chavez Studio of Magic, formerly known as the Chavez College of Manual Dexterity and Prestidigitation.

Close-Up Magic Erupts on Maui (by Dick Newton)
Since Warren Gibson opened his elegant magic nightclub a decade ago, magic has been far from dormant on the volcanic island of Maui. Warren & Annabelle's has provided a steady flow of close-up and comedy for Hawaiian tourists and locals alike.
A! ll right, you're not the only one who has never heard of Warren Gibson. And why in the world would almost half a million adults spend from $56 to $100 to watch a magician in Maui do two hours of close-up in a ninety-seat theater competing with 400 other island activities? You might bump into one of those unanimously satisfied customers, some of whom have seen the show five, ten, and fifteen times! Or, you may just read on.

Talk About Tricks (by Joshua Jay)
Vinny Deponto returns with one of the most offbeat applications for a thumbtip ever devised, and Gregory Wilson gets snookered while thinking outside the Magic Square. Wolfgang Moser offers a new way to pass out yo! ur business card, and France's Yoann Nnaoy provides a visual sandwich change.

The Show Doctor (by Jeff McBride)
DEAR SHOW DOCTOR: I just perform magic as a hobby, so far, but I read your column every month. I love magic, and I would really love to quit my horrible job and just do magic for my regular job. The problem is I don't seem to be getting many offers for paying shows. I'm considering using my skills to do walk-around or restaurant work, but I'm in the dark. How do I go about getting a steady job at a restaurant? Do you have any sense about how much money I can expect to make in tips there? Is this a viable way for a magician to earn a living these days? — Joseph P.

    Braindrops (by Adam Rubin)
Today, matchboxes are old fashioned and romantic, perfect for lighting a pipe or finely rolled cigar. At one time, fine hotels, restaurants, and bars had bowls of matchboxes sitting on their hostess stands. But amid growing publ! ic condemnation of smoking, the matchbox seems to be going the way of the cigarette case. And the lowly paper matchbook doesn't hold the same allure as a sturdy box. A matchbook is disposable; a matchbox is a memento, recalling a certain time and place. People tend to hang on to matchboxes for years; and for the following routine, the older the matchbox, the better. So go look in your junk drawer, your medicine cabinet, or at the bottom of your old luggage and dig up a forgotten souvenir. Hopefully, you'll be reminded of fond memories.

    Directions (by Joanie Spina)
It's absolutely true: in watching other performers, we can see ourselves. We sometimes make the same mistakes or the same brilliant choices, but don't recognize them until we observe them in someone else. Through this series of articles, enhanced by the accompanying videos you can find at www.MAGICmagazine.com, you can learn from watching other performers as I gently point out ways that their material can be improved, as well as the aspects of their acts that are working well. Although they refer directly to the video in question, these points also carry over as general principles of performing. There are many right ways of doing things, and these are a few options.
